The new year is a wonderful time to refresh your business goals and redouble your efforts to achieve them. However, if you throw yourself too hard into work and miss out on vital sleep, rejuvenating family time, and any motivational personal achievements, you may burn out before the year is through.
So, how does one balance reaching their business goals and avoiding burnout? This was something that Business Success Consulting Group CEO Adi Klevit and business coach and serial entrepreneur Eric Recker discussed in a recent interview. These two experts have much to say about business goals, burnout, business systems, and more. So, be sure to listen to the entire interview here.
Below, we will share their vital insight into how to reach your goals and avoid burnout in 2024.
How to Reach Your Goals and Avoid Burnout
Are you stepping into the new year with your best foot forward, ready to achieve your goals and scale your business? Follow these steps to both accomplish your goals and avoid burnout:
1. Set the goal
There are many goal-setting techniques, and each works for different people. However, the method we most often advise is to set a goal and then work backward to determine what needs to happen to get there. This strategy shows business owners the steps they need to follow to grow their businesses successfully and sustainably.
2. Consult with experts
No one is an expert in everything. This is the case for industry leaders as well as entrepreneurs starting their first business. When you have set your goals and worked out what needs to happen to attain those goals, you likely need help along the way. Consult with a business coach, topical experts, and others to help you rapidly reach your goals.
3. Manage your time
One can use many techniques to manage time, and the many available strategies work for various people. Eric shared that he uses the block time management method, but you can use what works best for you. Simply find the method that works best for your personality and which is most effective.
One thing to note is that any time management system requires self-discipline. It is easy to get wrapped up in parts of your business that you like to do and avoid those places that are not as fun. So, be sure to keep up your self-discipline or include some kind of accountability as part of your time management process.
4. Evolve and adapt as you move forward
As you create a time management system and set up processes and procedures to support more effective management, remember that your system will likely evolve throughout the year. You must adapt to scheduling changes, new meeting methods, networking/conference seasons, and more.
Additionally, you may have medical needs, additions to family, or childcare changes that affect your schedule this year. Evolve your system to include these common interruptions to the workday so they don’t catch you off guard.
5. Avoid burnout
“Avoid burnout” is undoubtedly a bold statement, and it is not one we thoughtlessly throw around. Including activities that help to keep you from burning out in your goal setting and then weaving them into time management systems is essential to keeping you on track and enjoying your year.
Here are five ways you can add burnout avoidance to your goal-setting and future time-management systems:
1. Create creative and joyful goals and include them in your overall goal-setting.
2. List things that keep you motivated and avoid burnout. Include them in an “anti-burnout checklist.”
3. Set up a checklist of daily activities that will keep you from burning out. This can include a rotation of the actions listed in “b.”
4. Find out what your employees or fellow entrepreneurs are doing to avoid burnout and support them.
5. Time block or use your favorite time management method to integrate an anti-burnout action into your daily routine.
6. Delegate tasks
Building a business is essentially a giant delegation process. If there is more than one person in your company, you have delegated. Take a look at what you are doing and determine if you can delegate even more actions to existing employees or new hires.
7. Build business systems for repetitive tasks that require your expertise
Some repetitive tasks require your expertise. You may have a daily meeting (or, if you are like most CEOs, several daily meetings) that follows the same general format. Create a business system so that no attendee has to think about it. Building systems makes things easier and allows you to use that mental energy to achieve your goals.
Time management, systemizing, and including anti-burnout goals are great ways to grow and scale your company in 2024 without causing burnout. Find out how you can document and incorporate business systems this year by consulting with the experts. Schedule your initial no-cost evaluation today.
