Entrepreneurship can help you build a path to freedom, financial success, and personal fulfillment. However, you must take specific steps to succeed, claim your time, and support business growth. Otherwise, you may find yourself burnt out and faced with endless to-dos.
In a recent interview, Eric Doumani, owner of Sunset Outdoor Creations, spoke with Adi Klevit about his journey from burnout to business growth. During this interview, he shared how he worked with Adi to build business systems and tap into the essential attributes of an entrepreneur to reclaim his time and build a thriving business.
The Essential Attributes of an Entrepreneur
Success as an entrepreneur requires a unique blend of characteristics. Eric and Adi discussed the four key attributes that enable entrepreneurs to navigate business challenges:
- Courage: The ability to step into the unknown and take calculated risks is fundamental. Fear of making mistakes can be paralyzing, but embracing the discomfort of growth is what moves businesses forward.
- Patience: Building a business doesn’t happen overnight. Entrepreneurs must be willing to endure setbacks, trust the process, and continue making progress even when results aren’t immediate.
- Willingness to Learn: Every mistake is a lesson in disguise. Entrepreneurs who approach failures as opportunities to improve will develop the resilience necessary to build a sustainable business.
- Adaptability: The business landscape is everchanging. Being open to new ideas, adjusting strategies, and implementing better systems can mean the difference between stagnation and exponential growth.
Breaking Through the Breaking Point
Eric’s journey took a critical turn when he found himself stuck, working long hours without seeing progress. Like many entrepreneurs, he excelled at his craft but struggled with running a business. The tipping point came when he realized he didn’t have the systems in place to scale efficiently.
With guidance from Business Success Consulting Group, Eric stepped back and took a high-level view of his business. This shift in perspective allowed him to identify key areas where systems and delegation could free up his time and allow for growth.
The Power of Systems in Scaling a Business
The transformation in Eric’s business didn’t come from working harder; it came from working smarter. Here are the key systems that played a crucial role in his success:
1. Documenting Roles and Responsibilities
One of the biggest challenges Eric faced was a lack of delegation. By documenting every task he performed, he could categorize responsibilities, build out job descriptions, and delegate work so it wasn’t all on his plate.
2. Hiring and Onboarding
Eric initially resisted hiring an office manager due to fear of the unknow. Fear of hiring the wrong person, high costs, and improper training. However, documenting the responsibilities of the role clarified the hiring process. Implementing a structured hiring process, including competency tests and predefined interview questions, ensured he found the right person for the job.
3. Process Documentation
With defined roles in place, the next step was creating a detailed system for how employees should execute tasks assigned to them. Using process documentation software, Eric built step-by-step guides for each role, ensuring clarity and consistency in operations. This not only helped in training new hires but also created a framework for continuous improvement.
4. Automating and Streamlining Operations
Once the right team was in place and processes were documented, Eric could focus on optimizing workflows. Systemizing tasks like customer communication, project management, and order fulfillment reduced inefficiencies and allowed his business to run smoothly without his constant involvement.
By working with Business Success Consulting Group to implement business systems, Eric transitioned from being overwhelmed to supported, all while leading a well-structured business that operates efficiently. With the right team and processes in place, he could focus on growth rather than day-to-day tasks. More importantly, he regained the freedom that led him to entrepreneurship in the first place.
How You Can Overcome Entrepreneurial Burnout, Too
If you’re feeling burnt out, know that you’re not alone. Many entrepreneurs reach a breaking point where they question whether they’re truly cut out for business ownership. The key to overcoming this challenge lies in systemization. Here is a brief checklist you can follow to begin systemizing and reducing your burn out:
1. Determine which areas are most “on fire.”
These are the areas you should systemize first. Not only do you want to create the ability to delegate, but building a system and creating consistency in these areas will also make things calmer. Finally, systemizing the departments that most stress you out gives you the opportunity to consider utilizing things like automation, which you cannot implement without building existing systems.
2. Document business systems.
Document through written instructions, images, and/or video each step of your existing business systems.
3. Make sure these processes and procedures are accessible by all.
Use purpose-built software or a company intranet to ensure your team can access the systems. Nothing falls into disuse faster than a system that no one can access.
4. Review the systems you’ve created and determine where you can delegate or automate.
Examine your business processes to find areas that could be automated or to determine where to delegate. This may mean hiring new employees to fill in gaps, but it will also make the onboarding much easier, as these employees can train on the newly documented systems.
5. Continue to refine and improve systems as your business grows.
Don’t stop refining your processes! Set a calendar reminder to review and improve your systems. Your business is dynamic, and your systems are too.
Entrepreneurship doesn’t have to be an endless cycle of stress and burnout. By embracing systems, you can create a scalable, sustainable business that gives you both success and freedom.
